What is different about computer science programs in California?

On University of California campuses, undergraduate computing is often a major inside an engineering college, and the campuses share one application. The degree is not always named computer science. Berkeley's sample major is electrical engineering and computer sciences. UCLA's is computer science. UC San Diego's is computer science and engineering. The public sample names those three. It does not include selectivity, cost, or a deadline.

The major and the university are not the same choice

Searching only the words "computer science" misses majors a student would actually want. Electrical engineering and computer sciences, computer science, and computer science and engineering are three different names for undergraduate computing at Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Each one sits in an engineering college on that campus: Berkeley Engineering, UCLA Samueli, and the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. The university name does not tell you which college teaches the major.

What to compare before a ranking

Compare the department's name, the college inside the university, and the fact that these campuses share the University of California application. That shared calendar is different from most private universities. It still changes by year, so this page does not turn it into a deadline.

Berkeley's EECS page tells prospective students to select that major on the UC application. Other campuses publish their own instructions. Read the department page for the major you mean.
